The computer tools
There are five computer tools to teach:
They are: 1) an informative tool.
2) a Communicative tool.
3) a Constructive tool.
4) Co-constructive tools.
5) Situating tools.
An information tool: The computer can provide a vast amount of information in varied forms, such as texts, graphics, sound, images, and video. Even multimedia encyclopedias are today available on the internet. Along the constructivist point of view, it is not enough for learners to download relevant information using the computer as an information tool. Students can use gathered information for composition or presentation projects as may be assigned by the teacher. Given the fact that internet can serve as a channel for global communication, the computer can very well be the key tool for video teleconferencing sessions. Types of an informative tool are sound, movie, text, animation, images, and graphics.
Constructive tool: the computer itself can be used for manipulating information; visualizing one’s understanding and building new knowledge. The Microsoft word computer program itself is desktop publishing software that allows users to organize and present their ideas on attractive formats.
Co-constructive tools: students can use constructive tools to work cooperatively and construct a shared understanding of new knowledge. On ways of co-constructive is the use of the electronic whiteboard where students may post notices to a shared document/whiteboard. Students may also co-edit the same document from their homes.
Situating tool: by means of virtual reality extension systems, the computer can create 3-D images on display to give the user the feeling that is situated in a virtual environment. A flight simulation program is an example of situating tool which places the user in a simulated flying environment.
Learning theories enable learners to learn different skills on their own. Example, in relation to cognitivist, learners can search information from the internet using their cognitive skills that are the brain. Whereby learner’s knowledge is expanded by searching more information on the particular topic.
Coming to behaviorism, learners can help to improve their typing skills after they have practiced several times in word document.
In relation to constructivism, learners design or construct materials using power points, word document and spreadsheet. We can also design presentation on teaching lesson using creating animations and videos. Regarding word document, we can design lesson plan and activities.
With regard to social constructivism, learners can share their ideas and knowledge using different collaboration tools such as social media, email, forums, VLE, and internet.
Cognitive learning theory applies as an information tool. As we know that cognitive is the mental process involved in learning. For instance, when we search information from the internet we first think what we are searching, then after getting the information, we try to select the best one by using our mental thinking and the later part we finalize the information and create our own meaning.
